Rattle Young Poets Anthology

Deadline:  November 15, 2024


Details:  

 Way back in 1998, Rattle published an issue featuring poems written by children. Unfortunately, it is now out of print. Starting in 2013, the organization has extended that idea, and began publishing an annual anthology of young poets. The books are available in print, and all of the poems appear as daily content on this website on Saturdays throughout the year. Every poet contributing receives two free print copies. (Note - contributors must have been 15 years of age or younger when the piece was written, and 18 years or younger when submitted)

Nancy Thorp Poetry Contest

Details:  

Sponsored by Hollins University, the 60th Annual Nancy Thorp Poetry Contest provides scholarships, prizes, and recognition for the best poems submitted by young women in their sophomore or junior year of high school.

Bennington College Young Writers Awards

Deadline:  Submissions accepted September 1, 2024 - November 1, 2024


Details:  

 Bennington College has a unique literary legacy, including twelve Pulitzer Prize winners, three U.S. poet laureates, four MacArthur Geniuses, countless New York Times bestsellers, and two of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people.


In celebration of this legacy, Bennington launched the Young Writers Awards to promote excellence in writing at the high school level. Our goal with this competition is to recognize outstanding writing achievement by high school students.


Each year, students in the 9th–12th grades are invited to enter in one of the following categories with the following submission:

  1. Poetry: A group of three poems
  2. Fiction: A short story (1,500 words or fewer) 
  3. Nonfiction: A personal or academic essay (1,500 words or fewer)

A first, second, and third place winner is selected in each category.

Drue Heinz Literature Prize

Deadline:  Ongoing program (prompts released weekly)


Details:  

 The Drue Heinz Literature Prize recognizes and supports writers of short fiction and makes their work available to readers around the world. The award is open to authors who have published a book-length collection of fiction or at least three short stories or novellas in commercial magazines or literary journals.


Manuscripts are judged anonymously by nationally known writers. Past judges have included Robert Penn Warren, Joyce Carol Oates, Raymond Carver, Margaret Atwood, Russell Banks, Rick Moody, and Joan Didion.


Winners receive a cash prize of $15,000, publication by the University of Pittsburgh Press, and support in the nation-wide promotion of their book.

YouthPLAYS New Voices One-Act Competition for Young Playwrights

Deadline: January 1, 2025 - May 1, 2025


Details:  

YouthPLAYS is pleased to announce the 14th annual YouthPLAYS New Voices One-Act Competition for Young Playwrights, designed to encourage young writers to create new works for the stage. There will be cash prizes for the winner and runner-up, as well as representation of the winning play through YouthPLAYS, the publisher of plays for young actors and audiences.  (Note - contributors must submit a query to the YouthPLAYS board and receive an explicit invitation to submit in order to be considered for the cash prize.)

Leonard L. Milberg '53 High School Poetry Prize

Details:  

 The Leonard L. Milberg ’53 High School Poetry Prize recognizes outstanding work by student writers in the 11th grade in the U.S. or abroad. Contest judges are poets on the Princeton University creative writing faculty, which includes Marilyn Chin, Michael Dickman, Katie Farris, Ilya Kaminsky, Lynn Melnick, Paul Muldoon, Kathleen Ossip, Patricia Smith, and Susan Wheeler. 


Also be sure to check out Princeton's tangential 10 Minute Play Contest, which opens annually to US-based juniors for submissions.  Acclaimed playwrights Jiehae Park, Anya Pearson, Dipika Guha, and others have judged the contest in recent years.

New York Times Writing Contests

Details:  

The New York Times hosts various ongoing writing contests for young authors and artists each month. Past topics have included personal narratives, critical essays, prose, poetry, and more.

National PTA Reflections Contest

Deadline:  Submissions closed to the 2023-2024 contest


Details:  

National PTA has a long-standing commitment to arts education. The Reflections program provides opportunities for recognition and access to the arts which boost student confidence and success in the arts and in life.


Each year, over 300,000 students in Pre-K through Grade 12 create original works of art in response to a student-selected theme. This 50+ year-old program helps them explore their own thoughts, feelings and ideas, develop artistic literacy, increase confidence and find a love for learning that will help them become more successful in school and in life.


Students submit their completed works of art in one or all of the available arts categories: Dance Choreography, Film Production, Literature, Music Composition, Photography, Visual Art

YoungArts’ National Scholarship Award for Writing

Details:  

 YoungArts’ signature program is an application-based award for emerging artists ages 15–18 or in grades 10–12 from across the United States. Selected through a blind adjudication process conducted by an independent panel of highly accomplished artists, YoungArts award winners receive financial awards, creative and professional development experiences with renowned guest artists, and become eligible for nomination as a U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts. Joining a prestigious artistic community, YoungArts award winners form a strong network of peers and receive a lifetime of support and opportunities.
