Please review this page before submitting personal inquiries! Listed below are a few of the most frequently asked questions our editing team fields regarding submissions, internship opportunities, and the StudentKind mission at large.
StudentKind Literary Journal was established as a youth-led initiative in the summer of 2023. Since then, we have expanded our reach to a number of social media platforms and released various authentic educational materials (including lesson plans, writing prompts, trivia questions, and more!). To learn more about the StudentKind vision, please visit our "About Us" page located under the "Quicklinks" tab.
All decisions are typically released within a few weeks after the submissions window closes in order to ensure that all entries are provided equal consideration. Submissions to the Summer Issue 2024 open to authors of all ages June 1!
Due to copyright issues, StudentKind is unfortunately unable to accept work that has been published to other literary journals or writing competitions.
As a small editorial staff, we are particularly interested in works that are authentic, innovative, and marked by the author's individual handiwork (for further inspiration, we recommend that you review the works featured in our inaugural winter issue). We also ask that all contributors carefully consider the formatting of the pieces they submit - as trivial as they may seem, good grammar and legible font sizes can make all the difference among a vast group of submissions.
We're always looking for excellent creative nonfiction entries to the StudentKind catalogue, a category that is often largely underrepresented among our submissions base. This fairly broad umbrella encompasses any true story that is told in new and exciting ways, including (but far from limited to) personal narratives, essays, book reports, recipes, and more! Please don't hesitate to extend any further questions regarding the constraints of this category to our submissions team at studentkindsubmissions@gmail.com.
We here at StudentKind are eager to review any cover art that comes our way! All cover art, regardless of medium, is to be sent using our regular submissions email (studentkindsubmissions@gmail.com). Cover art must adhere to the pre-defined theme of the issue and can encompass anything from watercolor painting to photography!
Our editing team carefully reviews each and every submission we receive. Usually, any given submission will be read and deliberated on at least 2-3 times before a final decision is made and is weighed via a complex points system that we use to quantify the unquantifiable quality of your work.
All contributors remain entirely in possession of all rights to their accepted work. However, StudentKind reserves the right to use excerpts from the author's bio, submission, and any other provided content for marketing purposes. If you would not like to have your work published to our social media accounts or literary magazine databases like Chillsubs/Duotrope, please include a special request in your submissions email.
Whether accepted or declined, StudentKind is passionately dedicated to fostering growth and development among our contributors. As such, any submission is openly invited to request personal feedback from our chief editor. Feedback requests can be made in the original submissions email, but a link will also be provided in your response letter to our designated request sign-up form. Typically, we will be able to get back to you within 1-2 weeks.
Yes! Moving forward, all open calls for submissions will fall under a pre-defined premise. The theme of the spring issue is The Wilderness Within (view the "Submit" tab under "Quicklinks" for further information). We ask that all submissions, from short stories to cover art, relate to this theme in some way. A great place to explain how your submission ties back to the central theme may be in your artist's statement!
Our Autumn, Winter, and Spring issues are dedicated exclusively to work sourced from teen writers. However, submissions to our cross-generational Summer Issue are open to contributors of all ages! We are beyond thrilled to review submissions from writers internationally for publication in the Summer Issue 2024, The Wilderness Within, in which no further restrictions other than adherence to the predetermined theme will be placed upon submissions. No matter what age, we can't wait to share your work with the world! Final submissions to the Summer Issue 2024 close August 1 to all contributors.
Our founder and chief editor, Liam Hancock, has been submitting to literary magazines and writing competitions his entire life! His works have been recognized in the National PTA Reflections contest, Stone Soup Magazine, and a number of other reputable programs. Liam's experience with the publishing industry and the backwards world of literary magazines has largely informed the collaborative, community-based program that is StudentKind Literary Journal.
Please reserve all client inquiries for the "Contact Us" tab under "Quicklinks." Our submissions hotline (studentkindsubmissions@gmail.com) is dedicated exclusively to entries to the journal.
A guiding principle of the StudentKind mission is promoting effective education in the language arts. We are always open to connecting with our valued educators to provide in-depth lesson plans, writing prompts, and more! Check out our "Education" tab to find already-published materials or contact us via the aforementioned mobile portal for free consultation.
Publication in a selective journal like StudentKind is massively beneficial to your overall roundedness as a candidate. Even for high schoolers seeking a degree entirely unrelated to the literary arts, putting your own authentic voice out for the world to hear is bound to impress any admissions officer reviewing your application. In the future, we look forward to releasing more admissions-geared content under our developing "Education" tab.
